50 Cent - Window Shopper - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bFLow5StvvU&ob=av2e

Throughout this 50 Cent music video there is a constant reference to wealth and women. The video clearly fits into the Hip-Hop genre and has strong references to the artists leading a wealthy lifestyle as shown in Monaco purchasing designer trainers. The video takes the form of performance and narrative and uses codes and conventions that are typically used in hip-hop/rap videos which are shots of girls dancing provocatively, flashy cars and trainers, close up shots are used so the audience can be voyeuristic .The video is primarily about how 50 Cent and his friends were from a poor background but now they are so rich that they can afford to buy items that are overpriced such as a $75 milkshake.

The performance side of the video is of 50 Cent standing in front of a big house, again referring to how much money he has. The clothes he is wearing is typical of a rap music video. These are predominantly designer clothes – jeans, jackets and bright white trainers. The jewellery that he is wearing also reminds the audience of how rich he is. The constant references to the amount of money he has refers to the title of his film ‘Get Rich or Die Tryin’’

Green Screen & Typography

When filming our Media Production everything was successful as we managed to attain a good amount of footage at a high standard using various shot types and locations. But when we came to filming the end of the second verse, Ashley found it difficult ti mime along to the lyrics so we didn't get any footage to this part.

We then sat down mind mapped our ideas and came to the conclusion of either re-filming in Peterborough, using random related shots or either 'Green Screening'. We felt by using Green Screen not only would it be very effective but it would also help to boost the grade of our production as it includes another effect. We used the stop- motion at the beginning of our piece, re-filming would take precious editing time and using random shots would not really be fitting. So we decided, although we could not afford a proffesional green screen room or we didn't have any similar equipment, to use green paper covering the floor roughly by 1m x 1.5m. We chose to put it on the floor as the lighting from the ceiling was efficiently spread across the whole of the green paper and not overly bright so it still merged well with our normal shots. We got Ashley to lie on the green floor filming above his torso, rapping the chorus needed.

Before editing the footage we asked various students and teachers for the opinions, they told us it looked effective and they couldn't notice that Ashley was lying down. So we further edited the footage and added various locations to the background to refer to the lyrics and to stop it from becoming to repetitive.

When we finished editing we had plenty of footage but we felt we could still incorporate more effects into our production. We decided to use 'Typography' as it would make a change from watching the protagonist rap. So we added it to the last chorus and that's what our production ended with. We felt by ending with 'Typography' not only was it something different but it was very effective and helped our production to maintain a high standard.

Lighting, Shot Types & Effects

Lighting

When filming our Media Production we will use natural lighting as we are filming during the day in a central city location. The indoor shots will be lighted by the normal lighting of the room as we do not own any lighting equipment so we will have to make sure the lighting fits in relatively well with the outdoor shots. The outdoor shots in the alleyways and tunnels will also have to be considered as we may have to use the light from the camera or from mobile phones, but it will have to blend in with the indoor shots or else the lighting will not be fitting.

Shot Types

When filimg our Media Production we will need a consistant range of shots, due to keeping our audince entertained and not wanting our production to become boring. There must be a wide variety of shots used but the main shots used will be mid shots or long shots to show everything that is within the picture. We may also incorporate some zooming in shots, panning shots just to create more exciting shots.

Effects

The effects when plan to use when editing our production are stop motion, slow motion and use various effects using final cut express and iMovie. We will also use Green Screen when filming and add in typography if we have less footage than expected. The stop motion will help to decrease the chance of boredom and leave the audience feeling taken back but while require an immense amount of planning. An appropriate background that links into the genre will also be effective.
For the slow motion we could take clips, then stop them, then continue to emphasize the paused shot. We could also increase the speed of shots of the train relating to the lyrics "Wherever We Go" or speed up shots of the riverbank where some of our shots will be taken.
We are also planning to use 'Green Screen' which well be beneficial as we cannot take shots of various landmarks so this will help us to easily incorporate our lyrics with our video. We can also use backgrounds of graffiti to add an urban effect to our production.

Market Research

From this data we can clealry see the age range of our target auience will be from 13-18 year olds. So our media production will have to target this age group according to our market research.

From this data we can see there is a near equal balance of females and males. Our media production will be generally aimed at males due to the production consisting of male actors and being produced by a male group.

From this data we can see that the two genres that are the most popluar are Hip-Hop and R&B. This fits into our media production as the genre our track is a R&B-Hip-Hop song.

From this data we can see the locations most popluar are rural and urban. This helps us to fit our track into a suitable location that our auience feel would be most fitting.

From this data we can see our auience feel that i clear balance of narrative and performance will make a good music video.

Costume & Dress Code

In our Media Production the protagonist will be wearing chino's, swaetshirt and trainers. Sterotypical hip-hop music videos contain designer labels and excessive jewlerary but due to the chilled out vibe of our track we felt casual urban clothing would be more fitting.

An example of a band who have the same dress sense are "Rizzle Kicks" and also "Olly Murs". The costume worn in these artists videos link in to the target audience for our production as the clothes worn are often mimiced by fans of the artist.

The typical clothing worn:
  • Hoody/Sweatshirt
  • Chino's
  • Plain or patterned T-Shirts
  • Trainers/ Plimsoles
  • Baseball Cap
